Tropical storm expected to hit Texas coast SaturdayFree Access

A tropical storm is expected to move ashore along the Texas coast on Saturday, July 25, according to forecasters.

A statement from the National Weather Service said uncertainty remains about the exact location where the system will make landfall and that tropical storm warnings are in effect from Port Mansfield to San Luis Pass. Port Aransas lies roughly in the middle of that area.

It’s a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico right now but is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm tonight (Thursday, July 23) or Friday, the statement said.

If it becomes a tropical storm, its name will be Hanna.

“The slow movement of this system may result in heavy rainfall across South Texas this weekend,” the statement said.

Maximum sustained winds of about 58 mph are expected when the storm makes landfall.

Total rainfall amounts of 4 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts up to 10 inches, have been forecast mainly for Friday night through Sunday night.

Minor to moderate coastal flooding from storm tides may take place on the beach, along with an increased threat of rip currents.
