Traffic detours planned on SPID tonight, Thursday

If you plan to drive from Port Aransas to Corpus Christi tonight or Thursday night, remember: Some fairly major road work will be happening on South Padre Island Drive (SPID). It could slow you down.

Main lane closures on SPID are planned for tonight, Aug. 8, and Thursday night, Aug. 9.

The closures are scheduled from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. both nights, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

TxDOT reported the following:

  • All eastbound main SPID lanes and the Everhart Road on ramp will be closed between Everhart and South Staples Street today and Thursday. Drivers will exit the freeway at Everhart, travel on the frontage road through the Everhart and Staples intersections, then re-enter the freeway east of Staples.
  • Two westbound main lanes on SPID will be closed between Everhart and Weber roads tonight as crews perform overpass upgrades at Weber.
  • Westbound lanes on SPID will be closed between Rodd Field Road and Airline Road while crews install barriers and lighting upgrades Thursday. Drivers will exit the freeway at Rodd Field Road, travel on the frontage road through the Rodd Field Road, Nile Drive and Airline Road intersections, then re-enter the freeway west of Airline Road.
  • Today and Thursday, Weber Road under SPID will close nightly as crews do overpass upgrades.

Drivers traveling northbound on Weber Road will detour via the eastbound frontage road to the turnaround at Everhart Road. Drivers traveling south on Weber Road will detour via the westbound frontage road to the turnaround at Carroll Lane.

The speed limit in the construction area is 55 mph on the main lanes and 40 mph on the frontage road. Traffic fines double in the work zones when workers are present.
