Update: Port Aransas Police Chief Scott Burroughs identified the man who died as Kristopher Wayne Welder, 22, of Ingleside.

Original report:

A 22-year-old Ingleside man died early this morning, Tuesday, March 12, after being shot on the beach in Port Aransas.

Another gunshot victim, a 19-year-old Alice man, underwent surgery early this morning at a Corpus Christi hospital and is expected to survive.

Although details are preliminary, investigators believe the suspect and the deceased man knew each other. It is unknown if the Alice man is acquainted with the suspect or other victim.

The suspect is described as a heavy set, light complected white or Hispanic male. He was last seen driving a gray or silver vehicle believed to be a newer model BMW with dark rims.

Port Aransas Police Department officers and deputies from the Precinct 4 Constables Office heard what they believed to be gunshots when they were dispersing a large crowd on the beach near Mile Marker 42 at about midnight. The crowd began running from the location.

Police found the Ingleside man with at least one gunshot wound to the chest.

About six minutes later, a 911 call came in reporting shots fired near Mile Marker 27, near Beach Access Road 1. Officers found the Alice man with at least one gunshot wound to the abdomen. Officers discovered that the victim had also been shot near Mile Marker 42 and had been taken to Mile Marker 27 by an acquaintance.

Both victims were transported by Port Aransas EMS to a hospital in Corpus Christi. The Ingleside man was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The Corpus Christ Police Department assisted the Port Aransas Police Department at the crime scene and hospital.

The name of the Ingleside man is not being released until next of kin are notified.
