Annual cook-off set for Saturday at VFW

Get your bean and chili pots ready for the 10th annual Moore-McDonald VFW Post 8967 Bean and Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, Nov. 17.

To enter, register at the post, 311 N. Alister St., anytime up to the cook-off. Cooks must be registered before they start cooking and allow enough time to have entries ready for judging at 2 p.m. for beans and 3 p.m. for chili. The entry fee is $10 per category. Beans and chili must be prepared and entered separately.

Prizes will be determined by entry fees collected, with an additional $100 donated by the post to each category. First place takes 60 percent of the entry fees; second place takes 30 percent and third, 10 percent.

Cooking spots are available on a first come, first served basis, and all cooking must be done on site.

Beans must be made with pinto beans and, while meat such as bacon or ham hocks may be added, chili may not be added. Beans may be soaked overnight at home.

Chili entries must be Texas style only, with no fillers (rice, beans, etc.), but may be prepared as hot as desired.

Winners will be announced at 5 p.m., and live music by Tequila Sunrise will begin at 6 p.m.

The cook-off is open to the public.
