Shrimpers blockaded access to the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and Sunday, July 22 and 23, 1989. Shrimp boats rafted together to block the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, the Aransas Pass, the Lydia Ann Channel and the Port Aransas harbor. The pleasure boat Tin Can got a close-up look as Coast Guard personnel boarded the shrimp boat Jacqueline Diane from the Coast Guard’s 82-foot Point Baker. The shrimpers were protesting a new law requiring the use of turtle excluder devices (TEDs). This photo originally appeared in the July 27, 1989 edition of the South Jetty.
