The public is invited to attend a “solemn occasion” that law enforcement and transportation officials are planning at the ferry landing in Port Aransas on Friday, Nov. 7.
The event will observe a grim 25-year streak.
“Every day for the past 25 years, someone has died in a crash in Texas,” said a news release issued by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
“There have been more than 91,000 lives lost in traffic crashes since Nov. 7, 2000,” the release said.
“The Texas Department of Transportation and our law enforcement partners call on everyone to help finally #EndTheStreakTX. Ending the streak will require every single driver to consistently make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel,” the release said.
“We all want to get to our destination safely,” the release said. “If everyone remembers who they are as Texans behind the wheel and drive kind, courteous and safe, then we can save lives.”
The event will start at 8 a.m. in the ferry stacking lanes at 619 W. Cotter Ave.
Officials expected to be on hand include Juan Marfil, P.E., director of traffic operations TxDOT’s office in Corpus Christi; Staff Sgt. Rob Mallory of the Texas Department of Public Safety; and Port Aransas Police Chief James Stokes.
