Police say man died after jumping from Port A pierFree Access

A 57-year-old San Antonio man died today – Tuesday, Dec. 16 – after apparently jumping from a fishing pier in Port Aransas, police said.

The man’s name hasn’t been released, pending notification of next of kin.

Witness accounts indicated that the man jumped from a private pier that extends into the Aransas Pass from Channel View Condominiums, according to Lt. Joseph Rivas, a detective with the Port Aransas Police Department.

The man had been staying in the condominium with two co-workers. The co-workers were fishing with him when the incident occurred about 3 a.m., Rivas said.

The man didn’t say anything before he climbed over a rail and jumped into water 8 to 9 feet deep, the detective said. Police haven’t determined why he did it.

The man’s co-workers “didn’t believe he was a daredevil-type guy,” Rivas said. “They still don’t understand why he did it.”

The man disappeared underwater and didn’t resurface, Rivas said. The co-workers reportedly didn’t know whether their friend was a strong swimmer.

A search was conducted by a boat from the Coast Guard station in Port Aransas, a vessel from the Texas Parks and Wildlife vessel and a police boat from the Port of Corpus Christi. Also involved was a helicopter from the Coast Guard station in Corpus Christi.

The Parks and Wildlife boat found the man’s body about 250 feet east of the pier, Rivas said.

The body was recovered about 9:30 a.m., according to the Coast Guard.
