Fort Semmes is topic for Monday lecture

Dr. Norman Delaney will discuss where, when and why Fort Semmes disappeared from Mustang Island on Monday, Jan. 25, at the Port Aransas Museum.

Delaney’s talk, “The Ninety Nine Unlucky Confederates: The Fort Semmes Garrison on Mustang Island 1863,” is part of the ongoing series of lectures at the museum.

Delaney holds a PhD in history from Duke University.

The lectures are funded in part by a mini-grant of $1,398 recently awarded to the Port Aransas Preservation and Historical Association by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The public is invited to attend all of the free lectures. Two will be held each month.

A wine and cheese mixer at 7 p.m. will precede each lecture at the Port Aransas Museum, 408 Brundrett St. The lectures will begin at 8 p.m. in the Port Aransas Community Center, 408 N. Alister St., adjacent to the museum.

The next lecture in the series will be on Monday, Feb. 8. Anita Eisenhauer, chairman of the Nueces County Historical Commission, will give a talk on “The Texas Cattle Industry and the Rise of the Packeries in the Coastal Bend.”
