Port Aransas High School teacher Gary Mott was one of 20 teachers in Texas chosen to tour death row, the section of prison housing individuals awaiting execution, while attending the Sam Houston State University Criminal Justice Instructor Training the week of Oct. 19-23.

The Polansky Unit in Livingston houses 2,500 inmates, 300 of which are death row inmates.

After passing through metal detectors, pat-down searches and six gated check points the teachers were given a tour of the facility. Areas viewed were the dorms, cells, cafeteria, infirmary, laundry, wood shop, barber shop, gym and open air areas.

Approx. 80-85 corrections officers maintain the security for the offenders.

Mott described the experience as “surreal.”
