A groundbreaking has been scheduled for a $2.1 million project to rebuild Ancel Brundrett Pier, which was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
The event is slated to begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17.
The pier is located at the north end of Station Street, near the Cline’s Landing condominium.
Among folks expected to attend are representatives of the City of Port Aransas, FEMA and the Texas Department of Emergency Management.
Officials from Urban Engineering and Russell Marine also are expected. Both firms are involved in the reconstruction effort.
Representatives of the firms of Broaddus and Del Sol Consulting companies reportedly will be there. Both companies have been under contract for the past few years to help the city recover from Harvey.
The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking.
Work is underway to manufacture the concrete pilings that will be used for the pier construction, according to Broaddus. They’re expected to be delivered in mid-to-late March.
The pier is scheduled for completion in November, said Leo Wood, senior project manager with Broaddus.
Made of concrete, the new pier will stretch 167.5 feet from the bulkhead, according to Michael Dorris, vice president of Del Sol.
That will be about 35 feet shorter than the pier that preceded it because dredging has deepened and widened the ship channel there, he said.
The project will be 90 percent funded by FEMA, with the state picking up the other 10 percent, Dorris said.
Russell Marine also will do drainage work and repair the parking lot, City Manager Dave Parsons said.
A new restroom building already has been built next to where the pier will be erected.
Reconstruction of two other city piers destroyed by Harvey also is expected to take place this year.
Pilings for J.P. Luby Pier at Roberts Point Park and a pier at Charlie’s Pasture should be ready by the first week of March, Wood said.
Work at both piers should be finished by December, he said.
