This illustration shows the layout of Harbor Towne, a large development planned for the harbor in Aransas Pass. The town’s city manager, Sylvia Carrillo, spoke to the Port Aransas Rotary Club about the development recently.

Our speaker on Aug. 13 was Sylvia Carrillo, city manager of Aransas Pass and president of the Aransas Pass Rotary Club.

She told us about the $1 billion Harbor Towne development at what was the largest shrimping harbor in the United States 50 years ago.

The Conn Brown Park, at the west end of the harbor, will still be a working harbor for fishing and boating, Carrillo said.

All the rest will be Harbor Towne, she said. It will have seven condominiums with starting prices of $375,000.

It will also have businesses and several fishing and shrimping sites. Work is scheduled to start in early September this year.

Aransas Pass is working hard to improve its quality of life and its place in the regional economy, Carrillo said. Everything on Wheeler Street from Lowes, Walmart and Walgreens to downtown will remain the same except for the added business from Harbor Towne, she said.

Carrillo wants folks to know that “Aransas Pass is the place to be.”

Carrillo grew up in Corpus Christi, attending Moody High School and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, where she earned her master’s degree in public administration in 2004.

She worked for the City of Corpus Christi from 2003 to 2012 as assistant director of development services. She was hired as city manager of Aransas Pass in 2013.

She has two daughters, Bethany, 23; and Megan, 17. She enjoys fishing, boating and anything outdoors.

Carrillo wants Rotary to help create more public servants who give more to society than they take.

Rotary is always looking for new members who will put service above self. If that fits you, please call Bill Bauder at 361-749-5111.
