Wing Ding shindig to benefit food bank

Chicken wing chefs will pit their best recipes against one another on Sunday, Sept. 4, to benefit the Port Aransas Helping Hands Food Pantry.

The third Helping Hands Wing Ding gets underway for the cooking teams at noon, and the public is invited to enjoy samples, live music and games starting at 2 p.m.

The event will be held at The Gaff and Port A Glass parking lots in the 400 block of Beach Street.

Entry fee is $20 per team for each type of wing entered.

Admission for adults is $5 per person, and admission for children 12 and younger is $3 or three nonperishable items per person.

Teams may begin setting up at noon, and must have samples ready for tasting by 2 p.m. Teams should bring a minimum of 50 wings.

Cash prizes will be awarded with half the prize going to the winning cooking teams and half going to the Food Pantry. A drawing for a 50-50 cash pot also will be held, with half the cash going to the winner and half to the Food Pantry.

Several items will be auctioned at the event to raise funds for the Food Pantry.

Entertainment will be by Niko Laven, a singer and guitarist.

Sandy Etheridge, who sponsors the event with her husband, Shawn, and The Gaff, said the goal is to raise $3,000. Last year, she said, the Wing Ding raised $2,500, and the first year it raised $1,500.

The event began when friends were bragging about what good chicken wings they made, and someone said they ought to put their money where there mouth is, Sandy Etheridge said.

The Etheridges pick up food for the Food Pantry at the Food Bank in Corpus Christi, and saw the need, so they suggested that the chicken wing cook-off benefit the Food Pantry.

Chicken wing cooks and those who just like to eat them are invited to the Wing Ding for some fun and to help the Food Pantry.
