Windstorm meeting set for July 8

What’s up with windstorm insurance?

You’ll find out if you attend a public meeting designed to update citizens on efforts to reform the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA).

The Coastal Windstorm Task Force will conduct the meeting, which will be 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 8, in the recreational hall at Pioneer RV Resort on State Hwy. 361.

Speakers are scheduled to include Charlie Zahn, chairman of the Coastal Windstorm Task Force; Port Aransas

Mayor Keith McMullin; State Rep. Todd Hunter; and Greg Smith, who has helped the task force do research on the windstorm insurance issue. Ingleside Mayor Pete Perkins also is expected to speak.

The meeting will be hosted by the chambers of commerce in Port Aransas, Ingleside and Rockport and the Padre Island and Flour Bluff business associations, plus the Padre Isles Property Owners Association.

Light refreshments will be served.

Organizers are asking that folks who plan to attend RSVP Angie Flores by calling (361) 695-2048 or sending emails to aflorestx@me.com.

A bill to reform TWIA could get a second chance at passage at a special session of the Legislature this summer if Gov. Rick Perry decides to add it to a list of issues to be considered.

Senate Bill 1700 died during the recently concluded session after it fell one vote short of making it to the Senate floor. The task force had been pushing for the bill’s passage.
