Wildlife refuge cleanup is Saturday

Volunteers are needed to help clean up the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge shoreline.

Whooping cranes will begin arriving in October from their summer home in Canada.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, a cleanup is scheduled to make the shoreline safer for nesting.

Volunteers will meet at Fulton Harbor at 8 a.m. and travel aboard the Skimmer to the refuge.

Those who participate will be dropped off at various parts of the shoreline to remove trash.

Volunteers need to be able to walk in rough, muddy terrain for moderate distances.

Lunch will be provided aboard the boat after the cleanup, and the group will return to the harbor about 2 p.m.

Participants should wear long pants, appropriate footwear, sunscreen and insect repellent. They should bring plenty of water.
