School buses were loaded, shoe laces were tied and backpacks were filled on the first day of school.

For many Port Aransas ISD students, Monday, Aug. 21, was a day to hang out with their friends, show off their new kicks and learn a few new things in school. Teachers had smiles on their faces and helped students find their way around the halls.

Clockwise from upper right: Ella Potts, a kindergartner at H.G. Olsen Elementary School, goes through the lunch line on her first day of school. Renee Hillis, food service supervisor at Port Aransas ISD takes down her name because students must provide a number for access to their lunch card. Valerie Martinez, an art teacher, goes over what she expects from her eighth period high school art class. A group of Brundrett Middle School eighth graders look over their schedules at the beginning of the day. Michael Parr, a first grader at OES hands teacher Amanda Tipps a back to school present as she welcomed students that morning. A group of students from BMS show a smile for the camera after the last bell sounded. These students were walking outside BMS to the pick up area. From left are Miles Parson, Sydney Herndon, Artur Pecore (behind Sydney), Ava Smith, Phi Pecore and Mark Herndon. Chloe Merchant, a fourth grader at OES, gets off a bus and goes to class on the first day of school.
