The D’Herde family of Port Aransas is seeking more volunteers to help run Fun 4 a Cure, an afternoon of children’s activities at Roberts Point Park to raise money for research and awareness of diabetes.

The event is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.

“The biggest thing right now is, we need more bodies,” said Mandie D’Herde, who can be reached at (361) 779-8967.

All proceeds from the event benefit the D’Herde family’s Knot Shots team that will take part in the American Diabetes Association’s Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes in downtown Corpus Christi Oct. 13. Teams raise money for the association to fund diabetes education, research, promotion of awareness and to directly help diabetes victims.

Fun4aCurewillinclude games, face painting, threelegged races, sack races, cake walks, an egg balance race, jump rope, foot races and hula hooping. The event also will include a moon walk.

Some activities will play on the diabetes theme of the event. A “diabetes shoot-out,” for example, will be a water fight with medical syringes (without needles).

“Knot Shot” necklaces, bracelets, earrings, lanyards and key chains will be sold. The D’Herde family makes Knot Shot items partly with cut-up (and sterilized) syringes.

Snacks and drinks also will be available.

Participants must buy tickets and bracelets to take part in all activities except for buying Knot Shot items. Tickets will cost 50 cents each. Bracelets that allow unlimited access to activities will require minimum donations of $5.

At least one drawing also will be held, with winners getting tickets to the Hurricane Alley water park in Corpus Christi.

A number of businesses, mostly from Port Aransas, have donated merchandise that will be used as prizes for game winners.

Brianna D’Herde was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2010, when she was 7 years old. Since then, she and her family have been involved in a number of projects and events designed to raise funds and awareness of diabetes. Brianna is the daughter of Randy and Mandie D’Herde.
