TPWD gives nod to saltwater fishing changes

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved all proposed changes to the saltwater fishing regulations at a meeting on Thursday, March 23.

The changes are focused on matching state and federal regulations to streamline enforcement and compliance issues.

The following changes were adopted:

• Shortfin mako shark were added to the list of prohibited shark species for recreational and commercial fishing.

• Anglers will be required to use descending devices in state waters when a fish exhibits signs of barotrauma and match federal DESCEND Act requirements.

• The bag limit for cobia (ling) will be lowered to one fish per day per angler for recreational and commercial fisheries.

These changes will take effect on Sept. 1.
