If something seems a little different about this issue of the South Jetty, but you can’t quite put your finger on what it is, here’s hint: Look up, then look down.
The page is slightly more than a half-inch shorter than it was last week.
That’s because the press at the Corpus Christi Caller Times, where the South Jetty has been printed since 2011, shut down its printing operation and moved it to Houston.
South Jetty publisher Murray Judson and general manager Kelli Hartig explored five printers before selecting the printing operation at the McAllen Monitor for the job.
Distance from Port Aransas was a factor, although some printers offered various options for delivery of the printed product. Another factor was page size. Some options would have meant going to a wider page size and some would have meant going narrower. In the end, the McAllen option was deemed the most practical, efficient and the least disruptive to readers and advertisers.
The South Jetty pages will be sent to McAllen electronically, and the printed product will be delivered to a location in Kingsville that is being shared by other area publications, including The Kingsville Record, that also are printing in McAllen.
South Jetty personnel will now drive to Kingsville instead of Corpus Christi to pick up the print product for distribution.
The newspaper still will be on newsstands about mid-day on Wednesday and in mailboxes on Thursday.
The change in printers does not affect the e-edition of the South Jetty, which is uploaded about mid-day on Wednesday.
