There’s a new postmaster in town.

Her name is Tami Williams, and her first day on the job was Tuesday, Aug. 16.

“I’m real excited about it,” Williams said. “It’s nice to be back in the South Texas area, close to family.”

Williams spent part of her childhood in Ingleside. Her father and two brothers live there now, and she has a sister who lives in Calallen.

Williams previously was postmaster in the town of Bowie, which lies between Forth Worth and Wichita Falls. She has worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 16 years.

The last postmaster in Port Aransas was Debbie Baker, who held the position for about a year and a half before leaving several months ago. Kenny Eastland, a postal clerk from Fulton, has served as the officer in charge, which is like a temporary postmaster, in Port Aransas since Baker left.

Williams supervises six employees at the Port Aransas post office. Asked about her goals, she said, “I just want to provide the best customer service we can and increase revenue, absolutely.”

The Postal Service has taken hits to its revenue in recent years with the public’s increasing use of e-mail and other online forms of communication.

Williams said that, among other things, she’ll encourage folks to buy sheets of stamps as gifts for various occasions.

“We’re just going to try to do our part in this office to help out,” she said.

Toward the goal of providing good customer service, Williams said she plans to meet with members of the public soon to ask what the post office can do to improve.

Williams said she hasn’t yet decided how she’ll do that. She said she might organize public meetings, or she might go out on her own and simply ask around.

Williams said folks can call her at the post office at (361) 749-5590.
