Sales tax allocation takes a dip

Up for the year to date

Six out of nine cities regularly tracked by the South Jetty reported lower allocations from sales taxes for the most recent reporting period. The period covers taxes collected in December as well as taxes collected from quarterly filers from taxes collected from sales in October, November and December, as well as 2016 sales by businesses that report tax annually.

Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar sent cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $858.6 million in local sales tax allocations for February, 1 percent less than in February 2016.

Port Aransas saw a drop of 8.32 percent compared to the same reporting period last year. The dollar amount for this period was $128,833.37, compared to the 2015 allocation of $140,531.51. Thanks to a strong reporting period for monthly filers in November, year-to-date allocations are up by 5.32 percent. Translated to cash, that $251,442.66 for this period compared to $238,733.61 last year.

“The cities of Houston, Midland and San Antonio saw noticeable decreases in sales tax allocations,” Hegar said. “The cities of Round Rock, Frisco and Irving saw noticeable increases in sales tax allocations.”
