A book about the timber and cotton industry in a small East Texas town and the families that control them is the topic for discussion at the Ellis Memorial Book Club meeting on Tuesday, May 12.

“Roses,” by Leila Meacham, will be discussed at the meeting beginning at 6 p.m.

The publisher, Grand Central Publishing, provided the following synopsis of the book: “Spanning the 20th century, the story of ‘Roses’ takes place in a small East Texas town against the backdrop of the powerful timber and cotton industries controlled by the scions of the town’s founding families.

“Focusing on Mary’s life, using flashbacks taking us from 1985 to the roaring 20s and further, the story blends the lives of the three original families that founded the town of Howbukter, the Dumonts, Tolivers and the Warwicks.”
