REBECCA wins it all

REBECCA, a boat owned by John Ramming and captained by Clinton Clark, was the overall winner at the 2023 Texas Legends Tournament that was held Wednesday through Sunday, Aug. 9 through 13.

Anglers aboard the boat caught and released two blue marlin and nine sailfish for a total of 1,900 points.

The second-place winner was Doulos. Juan Menchaca is the owner and the captain is Rand Clark. They earned 1,500 points with a catch and release of three blue marlin.

Taking third place in the tournament was Instigator, a boat owned by Josh Owens and captained by Corbin Plumlee. The anglers earned 1,250 points with the catch and release of one white marlin and 11 sailfish.

The fourth- place boat was Sashimi, owned by John Durham and captained by Zach Gueldner. The boat scored 1,150 points with the catch and release of 10 sailfish and one white marlin.

Fifteen boats competed in the annual catch-and-release billfish tournament.

A total of 67 catches were made during the tournament. The catches included eight blue marlin, 53 sailfish, two white marlin, one dorado, one wahoo and two yellowfin tuna.

The only wahoo caught was brought to the weigh station by Anthony Luprete aboard the La Belle. The wahoo weighed 36 pounds.

The Mine Time brought in the first- and second-place yellowfin tuna. The first-place tuna weighed 40.9 pounds and the second-place tuna weighed 38 pounds.

The one dorado caught at the tournament was by anglers aboard the Blue Rush. It weighed 21.5 pounds.

The Texas Legends Billfish Tournament has been held in Port Aransas since 2006.

“The tournament has pioneered the concept of video release format, with points awarded for releasing blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish,” the tournament website says.
