Lady anglers win tourney with big fish

This group won first place in the Powderpuff tournament’s amateur unguided division. A total of 53 women angers making up 16 teams competed in the 39th Woody’s Powder Puff Tournament on Saturday, June 18.

“ The tournament went smoothly and everyone seemed to have a good time,” said Glenn Martin, past-owner of Woody’s Sports Center and long-time tournament sponsor.

He said that he thought that more would have competed, but some folks thought it would not take place since Woody’s Sports Center sold and it and the Back Porch Bar were no longer in operation.

Taking first place overall in the amateur, unguided division was the team of Jackie Boening of La Grange, Bonnie Kinnebrew of Adkins, Morgan Boening of La Grange and Kelly Boening of La Grange. Their winning stringer weighed in at 15.85 pounds, including a 7.29-pound redfish, a 1.71-pound hardhead catfish and a redfish with the most spots.

First-place overall winners in the pro-am, guided division was the team of Ruth Maspero and Robin Nixon, both of Port Aransas, and Rachel White of Wimberley. They were guided by Rene Lopez. The team brought a 2.64-pound sea trout, a 6.39-pound redfish and an 11.51-pound black drum to the weigh station.

Winning second-place in the pro-am division was the team of Rosie Lozano of San Antonio, Renea Pearson of Boerne and Stephanie Roberts of Corpus Christi. Their guide was Lee Gonzales. Their stringer included a 2.63-pound sea trout, an 8.06-pound redfish and a 9.25-pound black drum.

The third-place winning team in the pro-am division included members Danna Akers of Pleasanton and T.J. Collins of Port Aransas. Mitchell Collins was their guide. The team’s stringer consisted of a 1.61-pound sea trout, a 6.42-pound redfish and a 7.42-pound black drum.

Individual species winners were as follows:

Amateur Division

Speckled trout: 2.10 pounds, Cindy Pham, Cathy Muth and Peg Croslan, all of Austin.

Redfish: 7.29 pounds, Boening, Boening, Boening and Kinnebrew.

Black drum: 8.16 pounds, Julia Becker, Tannie Baker, Charlie Becker and Codi Becker, all of Hunt.

Hardhead: 1.71 pounds, Boening, Boening, Boening and Kinnebrew.

Spot Pot: Redfish with five spots, Boening, Boening, Boening and Kinnebrew.

Pro Am Division

Speckled trout: 2.67 pounds, Kendall Rogers, Sandra Rogers, Terra Gordan and Vicki Sims, all of San Antonio.

Redfish: 8.06 pounds, Lozano, Pearson and Roberts with guide Gonzales.

Flounder: 1.27 pounds, Akers and Collins with guide Collins.

Black Drum: 11.51 pounds, Nixon, White and Maspero with guide Lopez.

Hard Head: 1.79 pounds, Brooke Wywias of Hurst, Cheryl Free of Tomball, Linda Zahn and Kim Winton, both of Port Aransas with guide Justin Macmost.

The 40th annual Ladies Powder Puff Tournament is scheduled for the third weekend in June in 2023, Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17, according to Martin.
