Police have released the name of a man who died in an apparent single-vehicle accident in Port Aransas early Saturday, March 15.
Killed was Jason Segrest, 52, of Houston, said Lt. Joseph Rivas of the Port Aransas Police Department.
“Our preliminary investigation shows that this is a possible single-vehicle, single-occupant accident,” Rivas said.
The accident occurred during the early-morning hours on Private Road B, within the Private Marina, off Channel View Drive.
Segrest was alone, driving a golf cart, when it apparently ran off the road on a curve and hit a palm tree, said Rivas, a detective.
The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that Segrest died of a head injury that resulted from an accident, according to Mike Hannon of PAPD.
Police haven’t found anyone who may have witnessed the accident.
A person in a nearby house spotted the golf cart and the man’s body about 7:20 a.m. on Saturday and called police.
The man already was dead when first responders arrived. Police are uncertain exactly what time the accident occurred, but the victim appeared to have been there for several hours, Rivas said.
An image from a security camera showed Segrest on the golf cart, entering the gated Private Marina community at 1:14 a.m., Rivas said.
While major injuries have been involved in certain golf cart accidents in the past, the accident at the Private Marina appears to be the first Port Aransas cart accident to result in a death. Golf carts have been on Port Aransas roads for at least 15 years now.
