Pet adoption set Saturday

Their parentage is uncertain, but their cuteness is not.

Several mixed-breed puppies that were found in a dumpster are among pets that will be available during an Adorable and Adoptable Day Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Port Aransas Animal Shelter.

Some of the dumpster puppies look like they could have some Laborador retriever in them, but others from the same litter look different, said Connie Beane, president of Animal Friends of Port Aransas, the non-profit group sponsoring the event.

“ Some are ver y fuzzywuzzy, so they may have a little shepherd in them,” Beane said. “Some are so brown and fuzzy, they look like miniature bears.”

Ten puppies were found, left for dead, in a dumpster in the area of Beach Lodge on Oct. 7. A Beach Lodge employee rescued them.

Port Aransas police have been investigating the puppy case with an eye toward possibly filing animal cruelty charges against whoever is believed to have dumped the pooches. No arrests had been made yet as of Tuesday, Nov. 7, police said.

The public is invited to check out the selection of potential furry friends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the animal shelter, located at 409 W. Cotter Ave. behind the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce-Tourist Bureau. The shelter houses cats, kittens and dogs, all in need of good homes.

Those who attend also may enjoy lunch with their new friend, as hot dogs will be served.

Also on Saturday, a t-shirt sale will be held at the Family Center IGA, 418 S. Alister St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those who are not adopting a new pet can still help by purchasing a t-shirt. Money raised from the sale will be used for improvements to the shelter.

AFPA will host Santa Paws, pet photos with Santa, on Saturday, Nov. 19.

Pet owners, including those who took advantage of the adoption day, are invited to bring their pets to Finn’s Landing, 2217 State Hwy. 361 next to Island Images Salon, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to be photographed. A variety of photo packages will be available.

All pets are welcome at Santa Paws.
