Party planned for ARK

A birthday bash for the Animal Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) will be held at the Civic Center, 700 W. Ave. A., on Saturday, Sept. 15. The ARK is celebrating its 30th year of operation.

Brian Winfrey will play live music, and a cash bar opens at 6 p.m. A “Texas luau” will be served by Coastal Catering, and ARK director Tony Amos will give a special presentation.

Tickets are $30 each and may be purchased over the phone, on the Web, or at Gratitude, 316 N. Station St. To purchase tickets online go to www.friendsoftheark.org and click the “Make a Donation” button. Note on the form that you are purchasing tickets for the birthday bash.

The ARK was founded primarily by Amos, a research fellow at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute, in the early 1980s. He began to find injured sea turtles and aquatic birds on the beaches and in the local environment as he did his research. To help the animals, he started the ARK.

In its early stages it only helped a few animals each year, but since that time the organization has grown to handle approximately 600 animals each year. It now specializes in marine turtles and birds of the South Texas coast.

It is the only facility that goes to rescue many of the animals it rehabilitates. Volunteers rescue animals from Mustang Island, North Padre Island and neighboring towns.

To report a stranded animal or get more information on the birthday bash or the ARK itself, visit www.friendsoftheark.org or call 749-6793. If there is no answer, leave a detailed message with your name and return phone number.
