PAHS tennis ends at regional

Port Aransas High School’s tennis team ended its season at the regional tournament against formidable competition from perennial powerhouse Mason.

The tournament was held Monday and Tuesday, April 17 and 18, in Corpus Christi.

In boy’s singles, George Clower got off to a good start with a solid 6-0, 6-1 win over Shiner. And then came Mason. It was like hitting a brick wall, and Clower went down 0-6, 0-6.

In boys’ doubles, John Feil and Jacob Williams gave the Weimer counterparts some game, fighting to a 3-6, 2-6 finish.

Also in boys’ singles, Shiner got the best of Dave Moats and Cole Smith, winning 6-2, 6-2.

The girls’ doubles team of Monique Lorette and Jordan Jensen hit Mason’s brick wall first, and fought to an 0-6, 1-6 finish.

The PAHS mixed doubles team of Toby Suphachai and J.D. Gonzalez made quick work of a team from Benavides in the opening round, winning 6-1, 6-2. But then came that brick wall again. The Mason team took down the Port Aransas team 6-0, 6-1.

“The region players had some very tough draws but completed a successful season,” coach Vic Dimond said.

The Port Aransas team fielded the most qualifiers it has had in four years.

Out of six seniors, three of the boys were district champs, as was the entire boys’ team.

“The seniors always represented their school with Marlin pride,” Dimond said.
