In their debut tournament for 2022, the Port Aransas High School tennis team earned two first places and one fourth place on Monday, Jan. 17.

West Oso High School in Corpus Christi hosted four other schools at the Al Kruse Tennis Center. Port Aransas was the only 2A school in the tournament among four 4A schools.

The Marlins won titles in girls’ singles and boys’ doubles and finished fourth in boys’ singles.

Jesica Harder opened play with an 8-3 win over the host team and mirrored that with an 8-3 win over Alice. It was a little tougher going in the finals against Sinton, but Harder split sets and fought off her opponent with a 10-4 third-set tie-breaker. She won the first set 6-2, dropped the second set 3-6 and went on to take the match.

Mark Herndon and Colton Huckabay dominated in boys’ doubles. They won the opener against Port Lavaca Calhoun, 8-0, then took on West Oso in the finals, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

Brody Milina came out strong with an 8-3 win over Port Lavaca Calhoun. He went toe-toe with West Oso’s singles entry before the match slipped away, 7-9. He finished fourth in that bracket.

Coach Vic Dimond said the next match is not until Feb. 15, when the team takes on the “ big boys” again in Flour Bluff, a Class 5A school.
