PAHS athletes take game to AP courts

Port Aransas High School took its tennis game to Aransas Pass for a tournament last week.

The junior varsity competed on Thursday, March 4, and the varsity took to the courts on Friday, March 5.

There were wins and losses, but as a team, lessons were learned that will add to their experience the next time they step on the court.

In varsity singles, Kasey Reed was on his way to victory in the semi-finals when he had to bow out due to a UIL commitment.

On the court, he had another solid tournament as he defeated Alanis of Falfurrias, 8-2, in the first round. He then survived a closely fought match in the quarterfinals, defeating Davis of Refugio, 8-6. He was up 6-4 in the semi finals against Tom Innes of St. Joseph’s Academy of Victoria when he had to forfeit the match.

The varsity duo of Matt Fries and Chris Eggleston used great teamwork and deft play at the net to defeat Tauzon and Liaou of Port Lavaca Calhoun, 8-3. They turned in an outstanding match against finalists Myers and Steele of Refugio. Although they lost 8-3, they showed great energy and net play, according to coach Larry DeWitt.

John Eggleston and Fallon Zollars gained valuable experience and made some great shots keeping varsity finalists Lowder and Foel of Sinton on the run. In the end they lost 8-1.

In the junior varsity mixed doubles, Port Aransas’ Kash Ousley and Nazmi Sayed, playing together for the first time, went neck and neck with Tatum and Corollo of Port Lavaca’s Calhoun High School before losing 8-6.

The junior varsity duo of Mamta Patel and Emily Klein showed a lot of spirit and hustle in playing a match that went back and forth against Rebecca and Linda Thompson of Aransas Pass, losing 8-5.

Jessica Borden had a good first tournament playing JV singles. She showed great concentration defeating Viviana Perez of Aransas Pass, 8-5, then defeated Morin of Port Lavaca Calhoun, 8-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she lost in a good match to Rubio of Orange Grove, 8-3.
