The British Petroleum Exploration Project Pompano rises in the background as boaters stop to watch the massive offshore drilling platform jacket’s sides being raised in October, 1993. At the time, the Pompano was the world’s second largest oil drilling jacket at 1,310 feet in height and weighing 36,000 tons. The raising of the sides was slowed due to mechanical difficulties. Once the side-raising was completed, the platform was scheduled to be taken to the Gulf of Mexico and installed about 120 miles southeast of New Orleans. This photo originally appeared in the Oct. 21, 1993 edition of the South Jetty.
