Experiments both outlandish and enlightening, and the students who created them, were the stars of the science fair at H.G. Olsen Elementary School on Thursday, Nov. 18.
Funded by the Port Aransas Education Foundation, the fair had fourth- and fifth-grade students create posters about experiments they conducted and the scientific process they used to prove or disprove a hypothesis.
During the fair, parents and family members of students got a chance to learn about these experiments, which included testing the popping ability of different popcorn brands, a hydraulic-powered robot claw and finding out what’s the best way to cool off one’s mouth after eating spicy food.
Seven students were named winners of the fair.
Fourth-grade science teacher Melissa Gillespie said staff and graduate students from the University of Texas Marine Science Institute judged the posters on three factors: the quality of the experiment, the quality of the poster and an interview with each student.
