Movie nights get a Western start

Hitch up your horse, hang up your hat and get settled in for a showing of a John Wayne western.

The Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department is resuming movie night for the winter season on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Doors will open at the City Council chamber, 710 W. Ave. A, at 6:30 p.m. for movie goers to grab a free bag of popcorn, find a seat and get settled in before the movie begins at 6:55 p.m.

Parks and Recreation will show a collection of public domain movies each month from November through March, all for free. Titles include mystery, westerns, horror, comedy and science fiction. Watch for movie titles and locations in weekly editions of the South Jetty.

This month’s showing will be “Blue Steel,” a 1934 John Wayne western. In the movie, Wayne plays Sheriff Jake who follows a suspected robber out into the brush. Just as he’s about to arrest him, the robber saves Jake’s life. The two wind up joining forces to battle a greedy landowner trying to take over all the ranches in the area. Gabby Hayes and Eleanor Hunt co-star with Wayne.
