The Marlins took on Orange Grove on Tuesday, Nov. 24, and played well despite coming out on the short end of a 74-48 score.

The Bulldogs took a 17-7 lead in the first quarter and never relinquished it, outscoring the Marlins in all four quarters. It brings the Port Aransas team to a 3-3 season record.

Given that Orange Grove is a 3A team coming off back-to-back playoff berths, Coach Paul Patteson said he was not unhappy with the Marlins’ play.

“Mac Owens and Andrew Groseclose came off the bench and provided a solid effort,” Patteson said. “Zach Ainscough played well on defense and showed a consistent effort. Christian Collins also played well on defense.”

However, he said the team made mistakes it was unable to overcome.

“Turnovers and poor shooting do not equal wins,” Patteson said.

“We struggled to find a rhythm early and made several poor decisions in the ball game and were not able to recover,” he explained. “Orange Grove played well on defense and kept us from converting even when we seemed to have chances.”

Tyler Pate put in 13 points including a three-pointer to become the Marlins’ high scorer of the evening. He was trailed by Groseclose with 10, Owens with 8, Ainscough with 7, Nick Benavidez with 6, Kevin Sikes with 5 and Collins with 1.

The Marlins are in North Texas today, Thursday, Dec. 8, for the Scurry Rosser Tournament at Scurry, southeast of Dallas, for a tournament that will last through Saturday.
