Marlin netters medal

Playing against Class 5A schools, the Class 2A Port Aransas High School Marlin tennis team made a good showing. The mixed doubles team, above, of Mark Vachon and Olivia Simpson took second place. The boys doubles team, below, of Tony Johnson, lef, and Zach Childs.

Taking on six Class 5A teams, the Class 2A Port Aransas High School tennis team brought home second place in mixed doubles and third in boys doubles, according to coach Vic Dimond.

The Marlins were playing in a tournament at Flour Bluff on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

The mixed doubles pair of Mark Vachon and Olivia Simpson opened with a win over Flour Bluff, 8-4. Next up was Corpus Christi’s Tuloso Midway that the Port A pair stopped, 9-7. Vachon and Simpson went on to defeat Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial, 9-7. In the finals, the local team was put down by Tuloso Midway, 1-8.

In boys doubles, Zach Childs and Tony Johnson beat Tuloso Midway, 9-7, lost to Veterans Memorial, 6-8, then beat Tuloso-Midway, 8-3, to finish in third place.

Colton Huckabay lost to Tuloso Midway, 3-8.

Daniel Galvan lost to Flour Bluff, 1-8.

Jessica Harder and Sophia Pressley lost to Tuloso Midway, 3-8.

Faith Hicks and Georgia Jimenez lost to Flour Bluff, 6-8.

The Marlins will host Aransas Pass and London on Thursday, March 4. Play starts at 3:30 p.m.
