Make it a merry Port Aransas Christmas

We’re all about stuff and money. We want a lot of stuff, and we want a lot of money, but we don’t want to part with a lot of money to pay for stuff.

So we top off the tank and drive miles and miles to save money to buy lots and lots of stuff.

We end up spending on travel what we saved on stuff.

Or we sit in front of a computer with that “deer in the headlights” look and charge stuff on the assumption that we’re saving money. We rack up debt by saving so much money on stuff we don’t need, yet we still can’t figure out that we never should have clicked the “check out” box.

Then, when the hometown purveyor of all that stuff you bought at the “big box” store in the city or online goes out of business, you are Not Happy.

To quote the vernacular du jour: Duh! Like, go figure.

We’re two-and-a-half months from Christmas, and many of you obsessive-compulsive types are already wrapping presents you bought in July.

For the rest of us who are just now thinking about the guy in the red suit slipping down our chimney, how about trying a round about town before you log on or drive off?

You’ve heard this from me before, and you’ll hear it again: You can find a gift for anyone of any age in Port Aransas.

Sure, there are some things – many things – not available here. But I guarantee you’ll be surprised at what is sold here.

Do me a favor. Take one day and your Christmas list, and make the rounds. Start early – lots of places along the waterfront are open, and you’ll find they sell more than bait. Work your way to lunch at one of our wonderful restaurants, take a load off your feet and check your list.

Relaxed and refreshed, and if you haven’t already filled your list, set out to visit the remaining shops.

Don’t forget businesses that offer services instead of, or in addition to, goods. Think guided fishing trips, pedicures, manicures, facials and gift certificates from restaurants.

The truth is, if you’re going to enjoy yourself, this should be more than a one-day excursion. Why rush yourself? Enjoy the day. You’ll see friends you may not get to see often. Take time to catch up.

You may not find something for everyone on your list, but I’m willing to bet you’ll make a considerable dent in your list, and it will be one of the most enjoyable Christmas shopping experiences you’ve ever had. I’d also venture to guess that you won’t spend any more money – maybe less – than you would have in the city or online. And you’re going to save time and stress.

Give it a shot – and make this a very merry Port Aransas Christmas.
