Lightning whelk is kids’ topic Tuesday

A free education program for kids ages 4 to 8 is offered for “Estuary Explorers” at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute.

The programs will meet on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. through the end of April.

Participants should meet at the trailhead of the Wetlands Education Center (WEC), 855 E. Cotter Ave.

Each program is limited to the first 12 students.

The program dates and topics are as follows:

• April 12 – Lightning Whelk. Kids will explore and use some basic scientific equipment to help make observations of the Texas state shell, the lightning whelk.

• April 19 – Earth Day. In honor of Earth Day on Friday, April 22, the class will be making eggshell planters that can be taken home and replanted on Earth Day.

• April 26 – Turtles. Kids will learn about the life cycle of a sea turtle as well as how to keep our beaches safe for the turtles’ journey as nesting season approaches. The class will conclude with a tour of the turtle area at the ARK.
