Learning is name of game for ladies

Port Aransas lost all four games it played at the Pearsall Tournament last weekend, prompting coach Jonathan Sheffield to ask only one question of his young and inexperienced team.

“I said, ‘Did you learn something?’” coach Jonathan Sheffield said.

It appears they did.

Port Aransas, awaiting the return of its large group of basketball players, took only 10 players to the tournament. Sheffield said he saw plenty of which to be proud.

“ There was a lot of improvement in things that don’t show up in a box score,” he said. “Backing up (defensively), moving around, being part of the game – this was a good audition for some to see how they can contribute when we get our full team.”

Port Aransas suffered a trio of losses in 70-minute pool-play games on Friday, Feb. 24, against larger schools with deeper teams. It lost 15-0 to San Antonio Southside, 17-2 to Churchill and 15-6 to Uvalde.

The Lady Marlins closed the tournament with an 8-7 loss San Antonio Cornerstone Christian in a 90-minute bracket-play game on Saturday, Feb. 25.

“We just didn’t have a lot of experience, top to bottom, but they played their hearts out,” Sheffield said.

The tournament wasn’t without highlights for Port Aransas (1-4).

Outfielder Tamera Whiteside went 7 for 9 with a home run and 4 RBI in four games. Sheffield (5 for 7) and Amy Beck (4 for 7) also had strong showings at the plate.

“I felt if Tamera did some work (after her freshman season last year) she had a lot of potential at the plate,” Sheffield said. “She might have had five or six at-bats up to this point, but she worked hard in the offseason. She led the way, hitting-wise, and had a very good tournament.”
