The Port Aransas Lady Marlins tucked five games under their belts to kick off the 2011 softball season, playing three on Thursday, Feb. 24, and two more on Friday, Feb. 25, at a tournament in Woodsboro.

“We played some real tough competition, but it was good for us to see good teams,” coach Steve Reaves remarked. “I was very pleased with how the girls played. We got better each game.”

Reaves was particularly pleased with how the girls handled multiple defensive situations, he said, since some of them hadn’t been covered in practice. He pointed out that the girls played a total of 18 innings, and had only two bad innings on defense.

“I told the girls going in that as far as I was concerned, these were nothing but glorified practices,” Reaves said. “Every chance we get to play a game before district is a great opportunity for us to get better.”

District play begins Tuesday, March 8, with a game at Benavides, but the Lady Marlins also had a double header scheduled for Tuesday, March 1, against Aransas Pass on the Port Aransas diamond, and the Victoria St. Joe Tournament in Victoria today, Thursday, March 3, through Saturday, March 5. Tournament scores:

Port Aransas 4, Woodsboro 10

Port Aransas 0, Goliad 14

Port Aransas 0, K’ville Academy 10

Port Aransas 1, George West 10

Port Aransas 14, Banquete 0
