Interim leader?

Trustees to talk about hiring a temporary superintendent

A closed session discussion about hiring an interim superintendent will be held during the Port Aransas Independent School District Board of Trustees regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 13, according to the latest agenda. (See agenda this edition).

The meeting, in the administration building, 100 Station St., lists another item in the discussion category about selecting a superintendent search consultant.

Board of trustee president Michele Lorette said putting those items on the agenda was her intention to start conversation.

Superintendent Dr. Sharon Doughty announced her 2015 retirement at a meeting on Jan. 15 at the end of a meeting that lasted four hours, including one hour of closed session.

When the South Jetty asked Lorette why the district would need an interim superintendent since Doughty will be employed through Jan. 16, 2015, Lorette said “My opinion is, ‘ You are right,’ we don’t ‘need’ an (interim) superintendent; it’s up for discussion,” she said.

Lorette said the intention is to explore options for immediate implementation and listed some questions the trustees may discuss: “Is it feasible? Is it necessary? Is it a financial expense we want to add? Do we want to wait and go through the process of looking for a new replacement?”

Lorette also was asked if Doughty would be leaving earlier than intended and she said, “Dr. Doughty will continue to be paid through her retirement date. She will continue her job as our superintendent. She has always and will continue to be dutiful to this board. Dr. Doughty respectfully will carry out the will of the board, and I personally appreciate that.”

Lorette said all of the comments are her opinion and do not reflect the opinions of the board of trustees.
