You didn’t see me in line at 4 a.m. at the big box stores in Corpus Christi on Black Friday.

Instead, I slept in, savored turkey hash for lunch (the real reason, as far as I’m concerned for having turkey on Thanksgiving), then headed out to shop Port Aransas.

Our daughter, who lives in San Antonio, was here for the holiday. She joined me, and completed all her Christmas shopping – within budget. Of course, I gifted her a little early, and gifted myself as well.

We left the house about 12:30 p.m. and were home at 4:30 p.m. – and that included a stop at the grocery store.

Port Aransas shops were good to us – and we didn’t even get to all of them.

Now, for the rest of my list . . .

Have you ever struggled so hard to decide what to give someone that, by the time you’ve made the decision, you’re so exhausted and relieved that you forget to actually get the gift?

Those gifts are usually for people who don’t really need anything, and what they want, they get for themselves. The gift is really an expression of affection, appreciation and friendship because it’s the thought that counts.

If you can identify with that, have I got a deal for you!

This week, we are publishing a story about local nonprofit groups in Port Aransas that accept contributions. So, this Christmas (and all year round) you can make a donation to youth, church or civic groups, the arts and a variety of good causes that operate thanks to contributions and volunteer efforts.

Most of these groups can use every dime that comes their way, so the size of the donation is not what’s important: It’s the thought that counts.

Size and color are not factors, and you don’t have to worry about whether they “already have one.”

One of the best things about making a contribution to a Port Aransas nonprofit group is that every penny goes to the cause. No administrative costs are cut out of the contributions. It’s a big bang for the buck, and it’s a win-win-win situation: You feel good, the person you honor feels good and the nonprofit benefits.

Another perk is that you don’t have to wrap it!

So, look for that story on Page ###, and match a nonprofit group to the person on your Christmas gift list who “has everything.”

Then go shopping in Port Aransas for everyone else on your list!
