Elementary kids will start fundraising soon

H. G. Olsen Elementary School students will soon be selling gift wrap, gift items, baked goods and cookie dough as a fundraiser for the school’s Parent Teacher Organization.

Red Apple Resources will be this year’s new vendor for the fundraiser, to begin Thursday, Sept. 8, and run through the Sept. 22. Deliveries will be made the week prior to Thanksgiving.

The PTO holds this fundraiser at the beginning of each school year to cover the costs of events and to supply the classes with needed items. This is the only fundraiser the PTO holds each year.

Students will receive incentives during the sale, including a bike for the top two sellers, a top selling classroom pizza party, an ice cream for every participant and a drawing for a $50 gift certificate with each student receiving an entry for every 10 items sold.

Money raised supports the school in the following ways: A voucher for $100 given to each elementary school teacher to buy something for their classroom, field trip money for music students to take a trip to the opera or ballet, end of year field trip money, a fifthgrade luncheon for students and their parents, t-shirts for the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program and for spirit week, a children’s theater production at the Port Aransas Community Theatre, food for faculty in-services, a volunteer appreciation tea, gift certificates for school board members and a scholarship to a graduating high school senior.

In prior years, the fundraiser also allowed for the purchase of interactive white boards for both fifth grade classes, a putting green for the physical education department to teach the students golf, paper holders and large rolls of paper and cameras and sim cards for the classrooms.

PTO events held throughout the year are a Holloween carnival, D.A.R.E. program, ice cream social, participation in the city’s Christmas Tree Forest, teacher appreciation luncheon, helping hands, field day and candy grams for Valentine’s Day.

PTO president Jenni Kite said the organization has a large budget to cover this year and has lots of ideas to add to their list. She encourages the support by the community to make this fundraiser successful, adding, “We would like to thank all of the teachers, and parents and kids that help us keep this group growing and be able do more and more each year.”
