Eggleston finishes fourth at district tennis tourney

Information provided last week for the varsity district tennis tournament omitted results for Port Aransas High School player John Eggleston, who placed fourth.

“Eggleston played his best tennis of the season,” said his coach, Larry DeWitt.

“John showed great improvement in all aspects of his game, including serve, ground strokes — both forehand and back hand — volley and, most importantly, a strong and consistent spin serve that kept his opponents off balance,” DeWitt said.

Eggleston defeated Alex Segura of Kingsville Academy 6-3, 6-0 in the first round.

He showed great composure in the quarterfinals, turning back Kolbe Ybarra of Yorktown by surviving a first set tie break, 6-6 (7-3), and winning a tough second set, 7-5. Eggleston played an excellent semi-final match against eventual champion Chris Pena losing 6-3, 6-4.

He lost a heartbreaker in the third place match that sent both sets to tiebreakers, 6-6 (5-7), 6-6 (5-7).
