John Eggleston, who will gradua te tomorrow, Friday, June 4, as Port Aransas High School salutatorian, has been accepted into the University of Texas Turing Scholars Honors Program.

Eggleston was a member of the Marlins computer science team that placed second in state this year. He was also on the tennis squad and was voted “most improved” on this year’s track squad.

The Turing Honors program admits only about 50 students each year. Some of the benefits are direct enrollment into the computer science program, bypassing the entry-level classes that are required of other students, priority registration for classes, smaller class sizes, guest speakers and close interaction with faculty. Students often participate in paid summer internships at companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Google, eBay, Intel, and Dell. Each year, the students compete in a three-day competition to present their ideas and innovations to venture capitalists, who often invest in technology start-up companies.

They also participate in advanced research at the university and at other prestigious organizations around the world where they have the opportunity to receive patents for their inventions.

The Turing Scholars Honors Program is free to students who are accepted, but does not provide additional financial assistance for the normal costs of attending college.

Eggleston is the son of Scott and Patty Eggleston of Port Aransas.
