Cast an educated vote Saturday

Unless you’re one of those whose mind was already made up, Candidates’ Night was probably an eye-opener.

All four candidates who participated – and there are only two contested races with two candidates each this year – are to be commended.

One, they’re offering themselves for public service, which is a brutal, time-consuming, thankless task.

Two, they’re putting their egos on the line because two out of the four are going to lose, and (ouch!) that hurts!

And three, it takes a lot of chutzpah to sit up there and put it all on the line in front of God and everybody.

If you missed Candidates’ Night, you still have several opportunities to catch up and make sure your vote is an educated vote.

One, we have a summary of what the candidates had to say that you can read on Page 2B of this edition.

Two, videos of both segments of Candidates’ Night, city council and school board, are available for viewing on the South Jetty Web site, www.portasouthjetty. com (you don’t have to be a subscriber to the Web site to view them, but you may need a pretty hefty computer because they’re each about 30 minutes long).

And three, we’ve got a video of Candidates’ Night at the office available for 24-hour loan at the South Jetty office.

The candidates answered questions and raised others, and if you’re one who has a question or needs clarification, contact that candidate and get your answers.

The candidates have submitted statements to the South Jetty outlining their qualifications and reasons for seeking office. They have run advertisements promoting their candidacies. They participated in Candidates’ Night which is available online and one video and is summarized in print.

Bottom line: There is no reason for a voter to cast an uneducated, ill-informed vote in this election.

Vote, but vote wisely. Our future depends on it.
