Drifting away

A piece of driftwood, above, about 70 feet long, sits on the beach near Horace Caldwell Pier on Monday, Dec. 28. San Antonio residents George Ramirez, right photo, and his wife Yvette set up chairs and a radio around the driftwood for a day at the beach. The Ramirezes said the driftwood was spotted in the water on Saturday, Dec. 26, before washing to shore on Sunday, Dec. 27, and was finally pulled onto the beach on Monday. City Manager Dave Parsons said he got a call at midnight Wednesday, Dec. 27, telling him someone with heavy equipment was attempting to haul off the piece. So, off Parsons went to the beach — in his pajamas and ‘fluffy black slippers.’ There he found some local folks who said they’d called dispatch to ask if it was OK to pick up ‘driftwood,’ and were given the go-ahead. Parsons, said the driftwood had already been spoken for. It is being divided among the county (which is getting an artist to create a public sculpure), the Animal Rehabilitation Keep for its new pelican enclosure and a Port Aransas furniture maker.
