Dress code set for new school year




According to the district’s handbook, the dress code is designed to teach hygiene and grooming, as well as prevent disruption and minimize safety hazard.

A warning will be given to students who violate the dress code. If not corrected, the student will be assigned to in-school suspension (ISS) for the remainder of day or until the problem is solved by a parent or guardian, according to the handbook.

The dress code prohibits the following:

• Skin-tight clothing

• Dresses/shirts with spaghetti straps, halter-tops, backless/ strapless tops, open- side garments, fish net, mesh, or see-through materials

• Tank tops (including sports jerseys) without a sleeved undershirt

• Low-cut tops that reveal cleavage

• Exposed undergarments (also, undergarments must be worn at all times)

• Shirts and/or pants that reveal midriffs when raising arms over the head

• Shorts or skirts with the hem more than five inches above the knee

• Pants or skirts with large holes or holes above the knees

• Pants worn below the waist

• Clothing with objectionable emblems, symbols, or suggestive or inappropriate writing

• Clothes advertising alcoholic beverages, tobacco or illegal substances

• Clothes depicting words, pictures or symbols that are derogatory, satanic, racial, offensive or vulgar

• Hats, visors, head coverings, rollers, combs, sunglasses or other nonprescription eyewear

• Visible tattoos

• Bare or stocking feet

• Pajamas or other sleepwear, including house shoes

• Chains of any kind, including billfold accessory, jewelry, etc.

• Jewelry presenting a type of safety hazard

• Distracting body piercing or simulated piercing.

The handbook also advises that students keep their hair neat, clean, well groomed, not covering the student’s eyes.

Many hairstyles are acceptable if the following extremes are avoided:

• Mohawk

• Corn row braids or spikes

• Geometric or unusual patterns shaved cut, or colored in the hair

• Inappropriate hair color variation such as blue, green, primary red, yellow, etc.
