Council votes to fund dog park

The Port Aransas City Council has set aside $22,000 in funding to possibly build a dog park near the city’s animal shelter.

Meeting on Thursday, Aug. 25, the council voted 5-0 to use park dedication fee revenue for the dog park. Council members Keith Donley and Charles Bujan were absent.

Park dedication fees are charged when people are issued building permits. The money goes to establish new parks.

The dog park is envisioned as a fenced area where dogs can run free, without leashes.

While the city is making plans possibly to build a dog park, Mayor Keith McMullin said he wants to see volunteers from the community step forward to say they’ll maintain the facility. City workers aren’t available for it, he said.

Discussions on the issue of a dog park have gone on for more than a year, on and off, and it’s been months since the subject has come up. McMullin said he is hoping to hear from the public again, soon, on whether support still exists for the project.

“If there’s not, we’ll save (the allotted money) and move on and look for other park opportunities in the future,” McMullin said.

The council vote was held during a public hearing on the city budget. No one addressed the council on the budget. A final vote on the budget and tax rate is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at council chambers.
