Controlled burn

A controlled burn sent plumes of smoke into the air as vegetation burned along State Hwy. 361, The Island Road, Thursday, April 4. The flames consumed acreage east of The Island Road from beach Access Road No. 3 to the park’s main road. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department was the lead agency conducting the burn. Damon Reeves, superintendent of Mustang Island State Park, said the burn was done partly to cut down on fuel for potential accidental grass fires that could take place later. Wildlife officials also want to clear out the area for growth of new vegetation that will be good food for wildlife, he said. Certain invasive plant species such as the tallow also could be destroyed by the blaze, Reeves said. This photo was shot from a private plane piloted by Mark Creighton of Port Aransas.
