The Lady Marlins will face a Sinton team that is “is very quick and athletic,” according to Coach Stephanie Cowen.

“They are aggressive on the defensive end and force turnovers. They have also added some size this year, and should be very good,” she added.

While Kenedy is something of a question mark, “McMullen won their district last year and they are very well coached,” Cowen said.

“Banquete is one of the top teams in the area. They are led by senior point guard Lindsie Chapa and post Nieves Pena. Both are very good players who anticipate well and can create shots for themselves,” Cowen noted.

Marlin Coach Paul Patteson anticipates a competitive tournament featuring Class 1A powerhouse Moulton that went several rounds in the play-offs last year.

Also, McMullen County will be bringing its play-off experience. The team went two rounds into post-season play last year.

Bloomington will come to town, bringing competitive Class 1A basketball with them.

Class 3A Aransas Pass will send its junior varsity to fill in for Texas Military Institute, which dropped out.

“I believe it will be a solid tourney,” Patteson said.

The Marlins will take to the courts at 8:15 p.m. tomorrow, after which the 2009 homecoming queen will be crowned.

Senior duchesses are Emily Scott and Katelin Dupnik, junior duchess is Kelsey Ortiz, sophomore duchess is Bridget Aycock and freshman duchess is Anna Roberson.
