‘Charlie’s Pasture’ will be subject of UTMSI lecture

Learn about the Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture on Thursday, Jan. 25, at the next lecture hosted by the University of Texas Marine Science Institute.

The auditorium doors at the Patton Center for Marine Science Education will open at 6:30 p.m., and the lecture will begin at 7 p.m.

Rae Mooney, nature preserve manager, will talk about updates at the preserve. She also will talk about upcoming improvements.

Mooney also will spotlight the preserve’s amenities, programming and volunteer opportunities.

She was named the preserve manager in 2019 and has lived in Port Aransas since 2007.

Previously Mooney was the project manager with the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program and as a research scientist assistant at the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute.

She has a bachelor of science in biology from Towson University and a master’s degree in marine science from the University of Texas at Austin.

Current projects at the preserve include improving public access and increasing connectivity between the different birding sites.

Mooney and city staff also work on habitat management and invasive species removal at the preserve.

The next lecture in the series is set for Thursday, Feb. 1, when Jordan Casey, assistant professor in the Marine Science Department at UTMSI, will speak.
